Mother and Child
“Mother and Child”, unique in the history of sculpture, expresses the mother and baby relationship in the simplest, most direct way. While most traditional mother and child sculptures place the baby on the mother’s lap or in her arms, this piece powerfully embeds the infant within the strong triangle of the mother’s torso. It almost seems to project from the womb itself.
The result is creation of a form relationship as primal and direct as a yolk within an egg or seed in its pod. The effect of such directness is that most people, upon first seeing it, are powerfully impacted. Children are especially attracted, wanting to caress the baby. Such power to move and console makes “Mother and Child” especially appropriate for hospital birthing centers and pro-life Megachurches.

Since Pop Art has legitimized radical enlargement of just about anything, a three, six or even a larger edition of this work could provide a compelling accent in front of a major hospital or birthing center. With the back quarter removed, the above sculpture can become a wall relief. Doctor’s offices are often small, yet, bursting with love, this work radiates it’s message of the doctor’s empathy.
Many hospitals, building upward from the edge of sidewalks, lack space for a sculpture. But this wall sculpture can be enlarged to editions of one and a half feet, three feet, six or even much more. Suspended by a concrete or steel girder already inside the walls, a very large copy of this sculpture will make it possible for hospitals with visually barren fronts to possess a dynamic visual accent in bronze, exploding with love. Such a piece will create an art icon in the community, making the hospital a cultural landmark.
